Fasten YOur Seatbelt

Ready For Take-Off: Fasten Your Seatbelt

When the flight attendant tells you to fasten your seat belt, it is to keep you secure during take off and landing, and when there is turbulence along he journey.  Our faith in Jesus is where we find that security in our lives as Christ Followers.  At the beginning of our journey, it is faith that helps us turn away from the world and its sorrows and o turn to the hope and promise we have in Christ.  At the end of our journey, it is Jesus who leads us home for all eternity.  And along the way, it is the security of our relationship with Him that enables us to face anything that comes against us, for we are His and no other power can change that.

Romans 8:31-39 (NIV)

 MORE THAN CONQUERERS

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us,who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:

“For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[b] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Mission

Life Changing Purpose: Mission

We all know that the only way to salvation is through Jesus Christ. Jesus, himself said so: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through Me.” (John 14:6) But the Romans passage reminds us that this does not happen by magic. It takes people who are willing to live out their purpose in missions, either by going or by sending. We go when we commit ourselves to service, among the poor, the marginalized and the unbeliever. And we send when we give so that others can go. It takes all of us to fulfill the purpose God has in using us to bring mission to the world.

Romans 10:9-15

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

Witness

Life Changing Purpose: Witness

Jesus called His disciples to share their witness with the world…not just with those who came to them, but to those they would be sent to in the name of the Lord. And it was not optional. Jesus did not pick out some of the disciples who were more eloquent or outgoing than others. He sent them all. Today, we are among those disciples. As Christ followers we are ALL called to share our witness by example and by sharing.  But what do we share? The same thing the disciples shared…our witness. Not our theology, not our traditions, not our desires. Our purpose is to share with others what Jesus has done in our lives for the making of new disciples who will carry on after us.

Matthew 28:16-20

The Great Commission

16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
