hope

All I Want for Christmas: Hope

The people of Israel had been waiting for Messiah for generations. They knew He was coming because God had promised it. They knew He would come from the line of David and would be a King. And they knew He would deliver His people. But they did not know how…or when. By the time of the birth of Jesus, Israel’s glory days had passed. They had served time in exile because of their sin and failure to trust God. Now they were subject to Rome and unable to govern themselves. The chosen people of God were in darkness. But they remembered the promise, and so can we. We are also among God’s chosen and darkness often rules our lives. But there is hope coming. The Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world is coming. And He is here! There is hope!

Isaiah 9:1-7

Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—

The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
a light has dawned.
You have enlarged the nation
and increased their joy;
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
when dividing the plunder.
For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,
you have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor.
Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,
will be fuel for the fire.
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
will accomplish this.

The Time is Now

Matthew 24:32-35

We see it all around us…the signs that the world is in chaos and in need of a Savior. In our faith journeys we are not preparing for something that will happen later, but for what is happening now. So the message we have received…the message of hope and salvation that we have been given to share…cannot wait for another day. You might have heard the old saying, “Ready, aim, FIRE!” But the urgency of the gospel often looks more like “Ready…FIRE…aim!”

Matthew 24:32-35 New International Version

32 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

Tell Me the Stories of Jesus: Candles and Floodlights

The parable of the Lamp shows us an important part of how we share the message of hope with the world…by being a beacon of light to the people in our lives at home, school, work, in the community and around the world. If we keep the light we have gained to ourselves, being inwardly focused to our own needs, we cannot live out the challenge God gives us to share Him fully with others. The fact is, it is not all about us and we cannot keep it to ourselves.

Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
