Tell Me the Stories of Jesus: We’ve Always Done it That Way
Jesus came to give the world a new message…that we can have a personal relationship with the God of the universe…that we can find hope and wholeness amid the chaos and struggles of this life…and that we will find eternal life with Him in heaven. Jesus also gave us the command to take that new message to a world that is anchored in the past so that newness of life in Christ can be theirs, as it is ours. The parable of New Cloth on an Old Garment means we must learn to change and adapt to be effective in our witness to the communities around us. Trying to fit the unchurched into our mold will not reach them. Offering them a new way of doing life in ways that meet them at their need will.
Matthew 9:16-17
No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. 17 Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
